The American Medical Association (AMA) aims to improve public health through the science of medicine. Established in 1847, the AMA has played an important role in the practice of medicine in America. In recent years the AMA has continued its call to aggressively advocate public health issues, including veteran’s health.

During its 2014 Annual Meeting, the AMA decided to lobby for a policy that would provide veterans full health benefits, in facilities apart from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The AMA took the necessary steps and raised this issue at the legislative and executive levels of the government. It sent a letter to President Obama in June 2014, urging him to take action on the proposed measure. Before the year was over, “The Veterans’ Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act” was signed into law. Through this law, VA and non-VA facilities can coordinate to provide medical care to veterans.
